10 Water Activities That Don’t Require a Pool

April 25, 2025 Katie

Last Updated on May 21, 2025

When the weather heats up, it’s only natural to want to cool down—and fast! But what if you don’t have access to a pool? Fortunately, that doesn’t mean the fun has to stop. With a little creativity and some simple supplies, you can turn your backyard (or even driveway) into a mini water park.

So, if you’re looking for screen-free, giggle-inducing ways to beat the heat, here are 10 water activities that require zero pool time—but still bring maximum splash.

SUPPLIES TO STAY COOL:

  • Water Guns
  • Water Balloons
  • Plastic Buckets
  • Hose
  • Sprinkler
  • Tarp for DIY Water slide
  • Large Sponges

If water isn't your thing, check out these fun backyard games to keep everyone entertained.

Sprinkler Play

To kick things off, there’s nothing more nostalgic than running through a sprinkler on a sunny afternoon. This tried-and-true summer activity for kids (and adults!) never goes out of style. Simply attach a sprinkler to your garden hose, turn it on, and let the fun begin. For extra excitement, consider turning it into a game—like “freeze” whenever the water hits you—or play music for a spontaneous backyard dance party. A great summer activity!

Sponge Tag

Looking for easy outdoor games for kids? Sponge tag is a fun twist on a playground classic. Instead of tagging by hand, the person who’s “it” uses a soaked sponge. It’s silly, safe, and guaranteed to result in laughter—and lots of splashes! Learn how to make DIY Sponge Bombs over at Happy Toddler Playtime.

DIY Slip-N-Slide

No need for expensive gear! This budget-friendly backyard summer idea uses just a plastic tarp, a little baby shampoo for extra slip, and a hose. It’s a hit with kids of all ages and is perfect for burning off that extra summer energy. If you’re ready to step it up a notch, all you need is a plastic tarp, some baby shampoo (for extra slip), and a garden hose. Spread the tarp over a flat or slightly sloped area, wet it down, and you’ve got yourself a homemade slip-n-slide that’s just as thrilling as the store-bought kind—minus the price tag.

Water Table

If you’re planning summer activities for toddlers or preschoolers, this one's for you. Meanwhile, for younger kids, a simple water table can offer hours of sensory fun. Fill a storage bin or shallow tub with water, then add cups, spoons, toy boats, or even plastic animals. Or purchase a water table with all the bells and whistles. This water table is a favorite in our yard! Not only is it calming, but it’s also a great way to build fine motor skills while staying cool.

Water Balloon Piñata

Add this one to your summer birthday party ideas list! Looking for a party-worthy idea? Try hanging water balloons from a string (like a clothesline) and give each child a turn with a plastic bat. As soon as one bursts, cue the squeals and splashes! It’s an instant hit at birthdays, playdates, or any day ending in “y.”

Ice Cube Painting

For a more low-key (but still engaging) summer craft idea, freeze colored water in ice trays with popsicle sticks. On the other hand, if you’re feeling artistic, why not freeze colored water in ice cube trays with popsicle sticks? Once frozen, kids can use them to “paint” on paper or even the driveway. As the cubes melt, the colors mix—creating beautiful, unpredictable masterpieces.

Cup-to-Cup Relay

This is a great team-building summer game for kids. For a little friendly competition, divide into teams and race to transfer water from one bucket to another—using only cups on your heads or passing them over your shoulders. Not only is it hilarious, but it’s also a great group activity that requires teamwork and balance.

Water Gun Art

Take arts and crafts outdoors with this vibrant summer activity for creative kids. If you have some squirt guns lying around, fill them with watered-down, washable paint or food coloring. Then, let kids spray their designs onto a large canvas or cardboard outside. It’s messy in the best way—and the final artwork makes a fun keepsake! This is one of my favorite summer activities for kids!

Drip, Drip, Splash

Inspired by Duck, Duck, Goose, this version uses a cup of water instead of a tap on the head. As the “goose” gets splashed, the chase is on! It’s a perfect way to blend traditional games with summer silliness. An ideal summer activity for kids.

Water Obstacle Course

In addition to fun summer activities, to end the day with a bang, set up an obstacle course using whatever you have on hand: sprinklers to crawl through, buckets to dump over your head, water balloons to toss, and towels to balance on. Time each run or just play for fun—either way, it's a fantastic way to burn off energy. This is a great summer activity idea for older kids who love a challenge. Time each run or just play for fun! We purchased this inflatable water park and it has become a summer favorite! This water park is another great budget friendly option.

You don’t need a pool to dive into water fun. With just a few supplies, a little imagination, and maybe a willingness to get soaked, you can create lasting summer memories right in your own yard.
